The 2006 Census populations shows that the largest number of self-identified Aboriginal people are First Nations with 91,400 (65 per cent) - the Métis population was 48,115 (34 per cent).

The Northern Affairs Division supports economic growth in the North, with an emphasis on long-term benefits. The focus is on assisting northerners to more fully participate in their own regional economy, and to play strong roles in shaping and planning their economy.
